Here are some of the best of the older Beef Buzz Programs that we have had since September of 2006.

Wednesday September 6, 2006- We begin a multi- day conversation with Anne Anderson out of Austin, Texas on cattle marketing- this report features the idea of “Never-Ever” cattle.

Thursday September 7, 2006- We continue our conversation with Anne Anderson- today talking about certifying the cow-calf operation for source verification and that entails.

Friday September 8, 2006- We wrap up our time with Anne Anderson as we talk with her about what the cattle producer in the future will have to do to succeed in relationship to producing a product that won’t be just a commodity.

September 12, 2006- We talk with Daren Williams, Media Trainer for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association about why it’s important for cattle producers to be ready, willing and able to talk to the media when asked to do so.

September 18, 2006- OSU Beef Cattle Specialist Dr. Glen Selk is with us today as we consider early weaning strategies for our cow-calf operators.

September 19, 2006- We continue a conversation with Dr. Glen Selk of OSU as we think about a “less stress” way to wean calves- Fenceline Weaning.

September 29, 2006- We wrap up our week with OSU Beef Cow Specialist Glen Selk as we think about when to call for re-enforcements at calving time.

October 13, 2006- Dr. Brad Morgan of OSU is one of the premiere Meat Scientists in the U.S.- and he helped assemble the latest Beef Industry Quality Audit for 2005- the full report is out and we dive into it with Dr. Morgan on this Beef Buzz.

October 16, 2006- We continue to visit with Dr. Brad Morgan of OSU on the 2005 Beef Quality Audit and some of the things we need to deal with that concern our customers in today’s beef industry.

October 17, 2006- We begin a multi day series with Randy Blach of CattleFax on where we stand in the cattle industry market wise- he acknowledges that we have had a lot of pounds of beef to eat through here in 2006.

October 18, 2006- We continue today with Randy Blach of Cattlefax as we talk today about the impact of Ethanol on the cattle industry.

October 30, 2006- Ag Secretary Mike Johanns says he expects a deal with Korea to clarify their protocol on handling any beef boxes found with bone chips- plus an update on pushing the Japanese toward the OIE standard.

November 1, 2006- As we begin a new month, we are pleased to have long time friend Dr. Chuck Lambert join us as he updates on the two step dance that we continue to engaged with South Korea on regarding the safety of our beef. Or is this just a barrier to keep cheaper US beef out of that country to protect Korean farmers?

November 6, 2006- We talk with the Vice President of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Paul Hitch of Guymon, about EPA Dust Regs and the Superfund Manure battle.

November 7, 2006- NCBA Veep Paul Hitch continues to visit with us about some of the big cattle issues of the day- in this report we talk animal ID.

November 13, 2006- Cattle Producer Bob Drake says that the battle over the definition of animal manure under Superfund must be clarified that it is NOT a hazardous waste- or the industry will surely suffer.

November 14, 2006- Today we explore voluntary Animal ID versus Mandatory Animal ID- one of the big questions ahead for 2007, based on who is now the Chairman of the House Ag Committee.

November 15, 2006- Dr. Brad Morgan of OSU joins us on the Buzz- and he believes that we do have a problem that we need to fix when it comes to heavy carcass weights.

November 20, 2006- At the just concluded National Association of Farm Broadcasters Annual Meeting- we quizzed incoming House Ag Committee Chairman Colin Peterson of Minnesota about his thoughts on Animal ID- and he says mandatory is the way to go.

November 21, 2006- Dr. Gary Smith of Colorado State was one of the speakers last week at the Beef Magazine Quality Summit- and we talked with Dr. Smith about his dealings with Asian beef inspectors and buyers over the last couple of years- he says it has been a time that has pushed us all to the point of anger and even beyond in dealing with Japan and now South Korea.

November 22, 2006- We continue our visit with Dr. Gary Smith of Colorado State as we think about ways to reach smaller cattle operations and get them to “buy-in” on beef audit priorities.

November 29, 2006- What about using the Brucellosis program as a platform for animal ID across the country?  Dr. Max Thornsberry of Missouri joins us today to advocate that idea.

December 4, 2006- Jay Truitt, head of the Washington office of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, says cattlemen are losing their patience with South Korea- saying its time to ground this flight from sound science by the Koreans.

December 6, 2006- Dr. Glen Selk of OSU is with us today- and we want to consider how often do we need to load up the pickup or 4 wheeler and go feed some supplement to those cows?

December 7, 2006- It’s not an attack on Pearl Harbor- but the South Koreans have launched an attack on our ability to do business with what was once our third largest trading partner in beef- Mike Johanns is NOT happy and you’ll hear his comments today on our Beef Buzz.

January 15, 2007- We begin a multiple day visit with Monte Reese of the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion Board and today’s report focuses on “vitality” as a word that beef advertising efforts will be shooting to convey to consumers in 2007.

January 16, 2007- We continue our conversation with Monte Reese of the CBB- today we talk about the need for kid friendly beef items and ground beef.

February 1, 2007- Greg Doud, Chief Economist with NCBA, explains the importance of getting the OIE BSE designation this spring- and how that may help us get commercial trade going with countries like Korea, Russia and China.

February 6, 2007- More with Phil Seng of the USMEF- there are political mountains within Korea to climb to get a more open beef market for US product- and we also talk with Phil about those darned mice in Japan- they are just like the Energizer Bunny- they keep on living and living and living!

February 8, 2007- Brian Bolton is CEO of Allflex, the ear tag company and we talk with him about Animal ID and why it offers both opportunities for profitability as well as having the potential of addressing the worry of animal disease traceback with just a small amount of information from each animal.

February 13, 2007- We begin several days of visiting with Dr. Jeff Savell of Texas A&M on the National Beef Tenderness Study released during the recent Cattle Industry Convention.

February 14, 2007 On Valentine’s Day- it’s somehow approporiate that we are talking “tenderness” here on the Beef Buzz with Dr. Jeff Savell of Texas A&M- today we look at the impact of branded programs and where we still need to improve when it comes to tenderness.

February 15, 2007- We wrap up our conversation with Jeff Savell of Texas A & M on the Beef Tenderness Study.

February 19, 2007- It’s President’s day- and we welcome President-Elect Paul Hitch to our Beef Buzz as we talk EPA and Dust rules as well as the definition of manure battle.

February 20, 2007- We begin a multi day conversation with Mark Thomas of NCBA on marketing and promotion efforts of the beef business- today we talk about the changing nature of advertising.

February 21, 2007- We continue to talk with Mark Thomas on marketing efforts for the beef cattle producer- as we look today at what the consumer is saying here in this new century.

February 22, 2007- We wrap up our conversation with Mark Thomas of NCBA with a look at three issues the beef business must pay attention to in the next five years

March 1, 2007- Today we cover the issue of Mandatory COOL from the perspective of longtime Congressman turned consultant Charles Stenholm from Texas.

March 6, 2007- We begin a multi day visit with Collin Peterson, Chairman of the House Ag Committee on several livestock issues- today we talk mandatory COOL.

March 7, 2007- We continue our conversation with Collin Peterson on a pair of issues today- Clarification on CERCLA and Manure and the potential ban on Horse Slaughter.

April 2, 2007- We begin a week long visit with Dr. Gary Smith of Colorado State and begin today with the international scene and the perception in other countries of the OIE. Smith believes that many countries- including South Korea- don’t trust the OIE and so remain suspicious about what they will say about the safety of our beef.

April 3, 2007- More with Dr. Gary Smith as we look at the issue of what the beef industry has learned about E-coli- and how Dr. Smith was able to share some of that knowledge recently with the Vegetable folks in California.

April 4, 2007- Today we talk HACCP with Dr. Gary Smith and how the beef industry embraced this concept and has reaped the benefits since that time.

April 5, 2007- BSE is on the decline globally- and Dr. Gary Smith says that fact is in our favor when it comes to eventually fully reopening both the Japanese and the South Korean beef markets.

April 6, 2007- We wrap up our time with Dr. Gary Smith as we talk with him about not allowing activists into turning back the clock on modern scientific practices that help us producer and process a safe beef supply.

April 24, 2007- Jay Truitt of NCBA visits with us as we talk about the latest word from US and Japanese officials on plant inspections in this country by the Japanese- as well as the OIE ruling and how it sets a new benchmark when it arrives.

April 25, 2007- Jay Truitt tells us that he is not all that optimistic about getting Disaster Aid on the back of that War Supplemental Spending Bill- even though the disaster assistance is needed and well overdue.

April 26, 2007- We continue our visit with Jay Truitt of NCBA- today we talk about farm policy- and Truitt’s contention that the Competition Title that several lawmakers want to install is not appropriate for the Farm Bill.

April 27, 2007- We talk Death and Taxes with Jay Truitt, who is concerned about losing some very important tax breaks for the cattle industry over the next couple of years.

May 1, 2007- NCBA Chief Economist Gregg Doud calls the South Korean market a “Billion Dollar Opportunity” for the US cattle industry if we can get things rolling at full speed in the months ahead.

May 2, 2007- More with Gregg Doud of NCBA- who gives us the correct timeline for Korean FTA signing and ratification by Congress.

May 4, 2007- Gregg Doud of the NCBA says that two countries rise to the top when it comes to stonewalling US beef after the BSE episode of December 2003- Russia and Mainland China.

May 7, 2007- Colin Woodall of the NCBA’s Washington office joins us today to provide an upbeat yet sobering look at the battle that faces the Livestock industry that wants to get a law in place that clarifies that the Superfund Rules and Regs do not consider animal waste as a hazardous waste. Some powerful lawmakers have vowed to block it- which makes the task doubly hard- take a listen to what Colin tells us about manure and the Superfund!

May 8, 2007- One more day with Colin Woodall of the NCBA- as we talk about the uphill battle over Horse Slaughter in the US.

May 10, 2007- Oh Happy Day! The Japanese are saying those younger animals that they have claimed had BSE and were the reason for the demand we ship only beef 20 months of age or less- those critters did not have a transmissable form of the disease. Phil Seng of the USMEF says this is HUGE.

May 18, 2007- It’s amazing how quickly the South Korean market is helping US beef values.  We talk about that today on our end of the week Beef Buzz.

May 21, 2007- The latest Cattle on Feed numbers were rather routine compared to pre report guesses- we look at them with the help of Tom Leffler of Leffler Commodities.

May 23, 2007- As expected, the OIE confirms the risk status for US and Canadian beef herds for BSE is “Controlled Risk.”

May 24, 2007- Phil Seng of the USMEF says that he is pleased to report that the audits by the Japanese government inspectors have gone well- and that we may be closer to getting Japan away from checking every box of beef we send them for problems.

May 25, 2007- The OIE ruling is huge in getting the Japanese market moving toward fully reopening to US beef- but just as important is what the Japanese have discovered in their mouse assays of infected tissue from those younger so called cases of BSE the Japanese claimed to have. Phil Seng and Greg Haines of the USMEF help us sort out this aspect of the Japanese story.

June 4, 2007-The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association has their 17th annual Summer Ranch Tour planned June 24-26 with 14 stops planned in and near the historic Chisolm Trail. Scott Dewald visits with us about the 2007 tour.

June 5, 2007- South Korea is not amused at the comedy of errors that has resulted in bone in beef showing up from the United States. USDA Secretary Mike Johanns calls it a “speed bump” that will get worked out- NCBA’s Jay Truitt has higher blood pressure this morning because of USDA’s misteps.

June 6, 2007- More on the mess with South Korea, as we hear from Dr. Chuck Lambert of USDA on this “temporary” ban on US beef that is in place once again.

June 8, 2007- Smithfield trying to decide if they will build the beef packing plant in Hooker- they will make up their mind in 90 days- and we get the latest word on COOL from Colin Peterson, the Chairman of the House Ag Committee.

June 11, 2007- South Korea has reopened their borders to US beef- and that’s a good thing- but still the cattle industry wants to know what the Sam Hill happened in the first place!

June 14, 2007- The Japanese have announced that their beef plant audits uncovered no problems in the U.S.- so they plan on eliminating the inspection of every box of beef that the US wants to to import into Japan. NCBA’s Gregg Doud joins us on the Beef Buzz- and gives two thumbs up!

June 18, 2007- When we have to jump through special hoops for South Korea and Japan to sell them our beef- it makes US beef just a little less competitive- we talk about the high cost of meeting non science based inspection demands and hear the thoughts on this subject of Dr. Jim Mintert of K-State.

June 19, 2007- We have a two day series that begins today on the Value of Added Gain with Dr. Glen Selk joining us from OSU.

June 20, 2007- More today with Glen Selk of OSU on the Value of Added Gain and how this is one reason that you need to keep your pencil sharp when it comes to buying stocker cattle.

June 21, 2007- Bill Bullard met for an hour on Wednesday with J Patrick Boyle of the American Meat Institute- and we talked with Bullard about what they discussed- getting on with the reality of COOL.

June 22, 2007- Today, we consider the AMI’s thinking on sending a letter to let producers know that COOL is coming soon- and that producers will need to have positive records that can help them vouch for the background of the cattle being sold into the beef pipeline- this in contrast to the Rcalf positive that everything is domestic unless the animal has the mark of the foreign beast.

June 26, 2007- We begin a multiple day journey with Gregg Doud, Chief Economist of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association- who says the announcement today by South Korea that they have cleared Cargill and Tyson of any wrong doing in the accidental shipment of some domestic boxes of beef to South Korea is very encouraging.

June 27, 2007- We continue with Gregg Doud of the NCBA as we think today about dealing with the Japanese- even as 2 days of technical talks are underway in Tokyo between the two countries over the safety of US beef.

June 28, 2007- Beyond Japan and South Korea, there are OTHER important beef export markets for the US to develop- and there is none any more important than Europe- We talk with Gregg Doud of NCBA about the potential across the Atlantic.

June 29, 2007- Beef Cattle Producers simply want a level playing field to be able to compete “mano a mano” for that bushel of corn with the ethanol folks. So Says Chief Economist of the NCBA, Gregg Doud.

July 2, 2007: Is the Cattle Cycle Dead? With all the outside factors impacting our cattle marketing efforts, if the traditional cattle cycle that we have talked about for decades dead and gone? We put that question to Greg Doud of the NCBA.

July 3, 2007- If you had replacements heifers being bred this spring- now is the time to do some pregnancy checking- so says Dr. Glenn Selk of OSU.

July 5, 2007- As we have said before,  MCOOL is going to happen- and that fact is starting to cause those unhappy with the specifics within the 2002 law to cry louder and louder for changes in how this measure will be implemented- we look at this latest cry for change in a conversation with Colin Woodall of NCBA.

July 9, 2007- We begin a multi- day discussion with Dr. Derrell Peel of OSU about the cattle market- and today we look at the summer dip in cattle prices.

July 10, 2007- More with Dr. Derrell Peel of OSU as we look ahead to the second half of the year and think about where prices may be headed- both the for slaughter cattle as well as feeder cattle.

July 11, 2007- We continue our cattle market “look in” with Dr. Derrell Peel of OSU- and it’s a Mama Cow special as we talk calf prices and strategy for cow-calf folks on this Beef Buzz.

July 12, 2007- We talk COOL with Derrell Peel of OSU- as we remind producers of the need to have a plan to provide the source verification that may be demanded of beef producers once we have USDA’s rules for this law in place.

July 13, 2007- Susan Schwab says “get er done” to the South Koreans in regards to fully reopening their market to US beef. Schwab is our nation’s trade ambassador and she will not move the South Korean Free Trade Agreement one inch towards submission to Congress until she sees US beef fully accepted by South Korea once again.

July 16, 2007- Dr. Glen Selk of OSU joins us today as we think about the nutritional value of hay harvested right away versus that that will be harvested around Labor Day.

July 17, 2007- Terry Detrick is a member of the Oklahoma delegation that sits on the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Advisory Board- and we talk about the highest priorities for spending those checkoff dollars in the coming year.

July 18, 2007- We begin our Beef Buzz reportng from Denver and we have Jay Truitt of the NCBA Washington office join us to talk about the Farm Bill markup underway this week in Washington.

July 19, 2007- We talk Death and taxes and manure with Jay Truitt today as we continue to report from Denver and the Mid Year Meeting of the Cattle Industry.

June 20, 2007-Randy Blach with Cattlefax joins us today as we talk summertime cattle market trends.

July 23, 2007- Joining is today is Dr. Chuck Lambert of USDA as we talk about moving ahead in our dealings with both South Korea and Japan.

July 26, 2007- Ross Wilson of the Texas Cattle Feeders is with us today as we talk the market forces bringing more corn acres into the mix- is the incentive enough to get adequate bushels of corn to go around for all the demands of ehtanol, feed and exports?

July 30, 2007- Dr. Jim Mintert of K-State joins us today as we talked with him after his Saturday appearance at the OCA annual meeting- we talked about current slaughter cattle prices and if the summer lows have already been put in back in June.

July 31, 2007- We give you the lowdown on COOL as the Chairman of the House Ag Committee explains the “deal” cut on COOL that is in the House passed 2007 Farm Bill Proposal.

August 1, 2007- We jump back to Jim Mintert and get him to restart his Crystal Ball to see him is out there for calf and yearling prices...

August 2, 2007- Japan loses another Ag Minister, which means no progress in working with Japan on relaxing US beef export rules- Meanwhile, we shoot ourselves in the foot AGAIN with South Korea.

August 3, 2007- Colin Peterson, the Chairman of the House Ag Committee has sounded off on the South Korean claims of finding bones in one 37 pound box of beef out of a 41,000 pound shipment. He says the Koreans are about to “inspect” their way out of a Free Trade Agreement with the world’s largest economy.

August 7, 2007- Foot and Mouth in the UK- again! Jim Robb of the Livestock Market Information Center joins us as we talk about the ramifications of the FMD outbreak in England-hoping it will be contained quickly. This latest experience is a good reminder to US producers that if we should ever see a FMD outbreak- it won’t be business as usual in the livestock industry- things will definitely be turned upside down.

August 8, 2007- More with Jim Robb of the LMIC- as we talk about the main competitor for bee sales in this country- chicken and the amazing turnaround this protein source has experienced over the last year.

August 13, 2007- K-State’s Jim Mintert returns to Oklahoma after appearing at the OCA annual convention in July- he speaks this past Saturday at the Southern Plains Beef Symposium in Ardmore- we talked with him about the rest of 2007 and cattle prices.

August 14, 2007- More with Jim Mintert as we talk about the major driver of beef demand as it went up earlier this decade and in the late 1990s- Low Carb High Protein Diets- Mintert says a lot of our improvement in beef demand was this diet fad that has now settled down considerably from that time frame- and beef demand has stumbled as interest in those diets has waned.

August 17, 2007- Gregg Doud, NCBA Chief Economist, says he thinks it will only be a few more days before we get the South Koreans inspecting our beef once again and allowing it into their domestic market- and he thinks that their recognition of the OIE World Animal Health Standards of allowing bone in or boneless beef of any age into their market will follow yet this fall. That- plus a Cattle on Feed Preview.
