For Very Different Reasons, Neither NCBA not R-Calf Are Thrilled About Canada Wanting Dispute Panel Against US COOL Law

Two cattle groups agree that they are not in favor of the Canadian decision to take the United States to the WTO over our Country of Origin Labeling program. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association's Colin Woodall calls the decision as "Unfortunate" and expresses the view that we could very well see the Canadians win the dispute- and end up punishing the US cattle industry by restricting US beef going into Canada. Here in 2009 in the aftermath of the BSE case of 2003- Canada is one of the leading markets for US beef exported from our country. NCBA is not a fan of the mandatory program, and Woodall adds that his organization fully expects the Mexican government to jump onto the bandwagon and request a dispute panel over their grievances that relate back to COOL as well.
Meanwhile, another group that is very unhappy with the Canadian efforts to extract damages because of COOL is R-Calf USA. Their CEO, Bill Bullard, contends that Canada has no right to prohibit the USA from having a COOL program, even as they have a similar program in place north of the US-Canadian border.
