Conservation Success Happens Down on the Farm- or Ranch
Wed, 23 Dec 2009 6:21:33 CST
The voluntary efforts of ranchers and farmers down at the grassroots level can bring about more and better results in maintaining and improving our natural resources- as compared to mandates and legal threats made by government bearcats that don't know or care about the efforts of those closest to the land. Scott Dewald of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association says that's a key message that needs to be heard and understood by state and federal lawmakers, the general public as well as state and federal regulators.
Dewald made those points to us as we stood beside new fencing paid for by Section 319 monies in Blaine County, close to the banks of the North Canadian River. We were on the land of rancher Steve House- and House is one of many landowners in the watershed that have participated in this voluntary cost share program that has money that has come from EPA, is overseen by the Oklahoma Conservation Commission with technical support provided by the NRCS of USDA and local Conservation District offices. House has moved some of his land in crop production from conventional till to no till, and has installed fences to keep cattle away from riparian areas on his land. The result is less agricultural runoff and cleaner water flowing down the North Canadian River, which ends up in Lake Overholser- one of the lakes that holds the Oklahoma City water supply.
Dewald says his biggest concern is that EPA and others only look at statistics that can be 10 years out of date when they make their regulatory decisions- instead of seeing the reality of conservation improvements made by folks like Steve House. Dewald explains these concerns to us on this edition of the Beef Buzz.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
