Oklahoma Ready, Willing and Able to Take on Bigger Role in Animal ID
Wed, 10 Feb 2010 21:16:47 CST
Oklahoma State Veternarian Dr. Becky Brewer appears to be okay with the announcement last week by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack that his agency is going to move away from the NAIS concept for Animal ID- and embrace a more decentralized approach.
The framework, announced last Friday at the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) Mid-Year meeting, provides the basic tenets of an improved animal disease traceability capability in the United States. USDA’s efforts will:
Only apply to animals moved in interstate commerce;
Be administered by the States and Tribal Nations to provide more flexibility;
Encourage the use of lower-cost technology; and
Be implemented transparently through federal regulations and the full rulemaking process.
Dr. Brewer says that Oklahoma and other states will fall back on older ID programs like those that have been in place for years to offer traceback for Bangs Disease and TB. as well as scrapies. At the same time, those that have embraced the RFID technology, that approach can also fit under the state administered program.
Dr. Becky Brewer is our guest on the Beef Buzz- talking with us about this process that has just been announced- and faces months if not years of discussion and rulemaking before it becomes a reality.
The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
