Can Vilsack Find the Recipe for Success in Widening Access for US Beef in Japan?

Today, we looked in the rear view mirror and reviewed the words of USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, who spoke with colleague Stewart Doan of Agri-Pulse shortly after he finished his meeting in Tokyo with Japanese Ag Minister Akamatsu.
The Secretary indicated that it's an accomplishment to get the Japanese to even agree to actively talk about getting a solution to more US beef access into Japan. He says he will return to the US and talk with USTR Ambassador Ron Kirk about a team to work directly with the Japanese to bring the two sides closer together and hopefully, get both sides on the same track.
The President of the USMEF, Phil Seng, is hopeful that these negotiations will result in getting beef from animals at least 30 months of age to be allowed into Japan- and Seng says the key to success is to keep the negotiations with as low of a profile as possible. He says that progress can happen if it is not allowed to be turned into a political football in Japan.
