Tight Supplies the Driver in the Summer 2010 Cattle Market

The current cattle market is a function of tight supplies- and Dr. Derrell Peel of Oklahoma State University says the cattle inventory reports have been flashing us signals for a couple of years that this tightness was coming- and the summer of 2010 seems to be a point where the gloominess of the general economy is being pushed back by the tightness of available supplies. Add to that improving beef export market clearance- and you have a formula that helped deliver a jump in cash cattle prices of five to six dollars per hundred weight this past week alone.
Peel believes that this situation we are now in will not go away any time soon. He adds that eventually, we will see some herd expansion, but it will be a cautious rebuilding when it manifests itself.
