Mark Dopp of the AMI Says Cattle Producers Who Support GIPSA Rules Simply Don't Think Other Cattle Producers Deserve a Premium for Their Cattle

Mark Dopp of the American Meat Institute raises an interesting concept about why some cattle producers are calling loudly for the quick implementation of the GIPSA Marketing Rules for Livestock. Dopp assures everyone listening to this Beef Buzz that the disincentives are very real and in some cases are unintended consequences and in other cases- INTENDED consequences. These consequences are to engineer how we market livestock in this country- and the rules will discourage packers from moving forward with many of the value added opportunities that are now offered.
Dopp's contention is that certain livestock producers deliberately want to keep their competition (other livestock producers) from getting a premium for their livestock, believing the market for cattle of a certain weight should be about the same across the board. These producers that don't want other producers to get more for their cattle see the GIPSA Rules as a way to slow down those premiums and make it easier for them to producer commodity quality cattle and get the same price that others that invest extra hours and skills into their animals.
Dopp was on one of the panels at the USDA-DOJ Workshop on Competition in Livestock last month in Ft. Collins, Colorado.
