Cattle Industry Plans Legacy for Longtime TCFA Executive- the Richard McDonald Leadership Institute

Mon, 01 Nov 2010 4:38:20 CDT

Cattle Industry Plans Legacy for Longtime TCFA Executive- the Richard McDonald Leadership Institute On today's Beef Buzz- we pay tribute to one of the cattle industry giants who helped establish the cattle feeding industry in the southern Great Plains- Richard McDonald. McDonald worked for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association from 1974 to his retirement in 2006. He passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer this past Friday midday. Funeral services are planned for Monday afternoon in Amarillo.

At Amarillo.Com, an article that spoke of Richard's life quoted feedlot industry leader James Herring. ""Richard came to Texas Cattle Feeders when the industry was just getting going and had just really begun to grow," said James Herring, president and CEO of Friona Industries, the fourth-largest U.S. cattle feeding company.

"He took a fledgling industry and shepherded it to being a real vibrant part of agriculture in the U.S."

In an Obituary for McDonald, it spoke of his time at TCFA- "Dr. McDonald joined Texas Cattle Feeders Association as Executive Assistant in 1974 and retired as President and CEO in 2006, leaving giant footprints on the growth of the Association over more than 30 years. His strengths in research and regulatory areas coincided with the organization’s growth. His integrity and credibility in legislative affairs led to major political victories for TCFA and national organizations."

Today on our Beef Buzz, we look back to this past Monday when the Texas Cattle Feeders Announced a special way to honor the life of Richard McDonald- the Richard McDonald Leadership Institute. Ross Wilson, current CEO of the TCFA, made the announcement along with Forest Roberts of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. We talked with Roberts after the lunchtime announcement last Monday and you can learn more about the Leadership Institute by listening to our conversation with Forest Roberts.
