Phil Seng, USMEF, says Beef Exports with Korea and Japan Holding Strong in 2011

The U.S. beef exports with Korea and Japan held strong in 2010 and have only increased through the 2011 year. According to Phil Seng, President and CEO of U.S. Meat Export Federation, Korea has increased 100% this year over last year in beef exports and Japan has had a 75% increase compared to last year.
Seng says despite the setbacks Japan has seen this year with the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear issue, there has still been significant increase in U.S. beef exports. Also, the recent concern of cesium beef in Japan is causing more consumers to look to imported beef, such as U.S. beef.
The Korean economy is doing well and continuing to increase, which Seng says is helping the U.S. to reaquaint the Korean consumer with the U.S. beef product. Before 2003, when the market with Korea was closed, the U.S. had 60% of the market share of all domestic and imported beef. Seng says the U.S. has been able to go back to consumers, like Korea, and target the people that were heavy users of our product in the past.
