Congressman Promises to Keep His Eye on the Obama Administration and Their Youth Labor Rule

The celebrations in farm country continue. The decision announced last week by the Obama Administration to not pursue the proposed rule that would have strictly regulated young men and ladies under 16 when it came to working on a farm or ranch. The Administration admitted they had a huge pushback by the rural community- and that played a role in setting back from this regulation. On today's beef Buzz, we hear from the President of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Nebraska cattle producer JD Alexander as well as from one of the key lawmakers who hounded the Obama Administration until the announcement was made this past week to throw in the towel, Congressman Denny Rehberg of Montana.
Last week, after word came from the Department of Labor, Rehberg promptly issued the following statement: "It's a shame that it took this many people this much time and hard work to get the Obama Administration to do the right thing. Dealing with the Obama Administration is a bit like driving a tractor with a flat tire you can't take your hands off the wheel for a second or you'll veer left and wind up in the ditch. I'm going to keep both hands on the wheel, serving as a check to the urban-centered policies coming out of Washington. That means including language in my Appropriations Bill to make sure the President keeps his word. And it means keeping up the fight to prevent the Obama Administration from running amok and regulating puddles of water or imposing onerous government requirements to store fuel. This is a big victory for everyone who fights for common sense in Congress."
Rehberg, in comments made to the media this past Friday, said that with the DOL Secretary from Los Angeles and the President from Chicago, there is little wonder why they were totally unaware of why this would be devastating to farm and ranch families across the United States.
He indicates that while he takes the President at his word- he will remember the words of former President Ronald Reagan who talked about his dealings with the Kremlin- and said of deals struck with them- "Trust but Verify." To that end, Rehberg, who sits on the House Appropriations Committee, will include language in the FY 2013 Department of Labor funding bill that no money will go to any effort to restart efforts to pursue this Rural Youth Labor Rule.
