Cattle on Feed Pre Report Guesses Anticipate Big Falloff in Placements of Calves Into Feedlots

On Friday, the next regular monthly Cattle on Feed Report will be released by the US Department of Agriculture, and at least two of the organizations that offer pre report "guesses" are thinking placements will be significantly smaller than placements of April 2011. Jim Robb, the director for the Livestock Market Information Center, has told Agriculture Today that he sees a drop of 11% under the numbers in April of 2011 for this year's month of April. The report will be released at 2:00 PM central time, May 18, 2012.
Overall, he believes that we are starting to run short of cattle compared to the last couple of years- and that this month's report will be another evidence of that. He thinks we will be right at 100% of the total on feed number as of May first this year versus one year ago.

We also have the Allendale Research numbers for the upcoming report, courtesy of their Director of Research, Rich Nelson. Nelson emailed us his expectations for this Friday's feedlot cattle count- saying
"April Placements are expected to be 8.1% lower than last year. The cash cattle decline in April, of $5.50 from start to end, may have limited feedlot inflows. Additionally lower supplies of available feeder cattle, estimated by USDA to be 3% lower than last year, was a factor. Lastly, the comparison may be skewed as April of last year saw a large placement figure. Cattle placed in April will be marketed from September through November.
"Allendale anticipates a Marketing total 3.6% lower than April of 2011.
"Total Cattle on Feed as of May 1 will be 1.1% higher than last year. This is lower than last month's estimate of 2.0% larger supplies."
