Keep Progeny's End Use in Mind When Selecting Replacement Heifers, Cow-Calf Specialist Says
Fri, 17 Aug 2012 15:36:00 CDT
With limited forage supplies and the prospect of higher feed costs on the horizon due to the drought, K-State cow-calf specialist Bob Weaber says producers need to be very selective in their heifer replacement decisions. Careless decisions could lead to higher production costs so he encourages producers to consider the end use of the heifer's progeny when making selection decisions.
"I think we're getting to a point in many breeds where we probably need to separate our maternal selection decisions from our terminal, say, or calf-selection decisions. And so the bulls we use for those two different sets of calves in our operation, likely, need to be different."
Weaber talks with Farm Director Ron Hays on today's beef and also says, considering the drought of the last two years, producers need to make sure the heifers they choose to retain will thrive in the environment they will most likely encounter in the future.
