OYE Beef Heifer Judge Talks Connections Between Show Animals and Mama Cow Herds

There were sixteen different beef breeds represented in the 2014 Oklahoma Youth Expo Beef Heifer contest. And that does not count the 190 commercial heifers that were crossbreds that showed in a separate division. One of the judges that spent Sunday and Monday sorting all of these breeds as well as the commercial crossbred entries out was Texas A&M Assistant Professor Dr. John Rayfield.
Rayfield told us between classes that the heifers he was seeing in the show ring needed to relate back to the right kind of heifer for today's commercial beef herd- including the need to be a functional female- one that can get out and forage and have staying power to be a part of the beef herd for many years. You can hear his comments about how he was selecting heifers at the show- and how they relate back to the beef cattle herds of both Texas and Oklahoma.
