Kay Johnson Smith Previews Animal Agriculture Alliance Stakeholders Summit
Fri, 01 May 2015 14:30:18 CDT
It's the 14th Annual Stakeholders Summit of the Animal Agriculture Alliance coming up May 6th and 7th in Kansas City. It's one of the best programs around when it comes to animal agriculture. Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays sat down with the Animal Agriculture Alliance President and CEO Kay Johnson Smith to talk about the summit. Click or tap on the LISTEN BAR below to listen to today's Beef Buzz feature.
This is the first time the Animal Agriculture Alliance stakeholders summit is being held outside of the Washington D.C. area. She said they are kicking off the summit with the executive editor of the National Geographic magazine. Last year, Dennis Dimick was responsible for the 2014 "Future of Food" series. Johnson Smith said they did in-depth studies on sustainability, the environmental impact, large versus small agricultural operations. These are similar areas the Animal Agricultural Alliance has focused on. Johnson Smith said they are excited to hear from National Geographic about where society and agriculture has come from and where they have projected where society will go.
Jeff Fromm, author of "Marketing to Millennials" will address how to get inside the hearts and minds of the millennial generation. This is the largest segment of the U.S. population today.
"These are up and coming leaders in policies, in businesses and purchasing food products," Johnson Smith said. "So how to do we, as an agricultural community that tends to be a little older generation, connect with those millennials."
The summit will also offer several indepth sessions on sustainability by taking a look at what some stakeholders are doing to measure their carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Johnson Smith said they will also look at where the agricultural community is be driven by some food companies.
The summit will also address ways agricultural producers can connect with the average consumer and ways some producers are creating that sense of transparency.
"We as an agricultural community are really striving to be transparent, to provide answers to where food comes from," Johnson Smith said.
One of the speakers is Cameron Bruett of JBS USA & Pilgrim's. Johnson Smith said JBS interacts with a lot of big buyers that are the companies that are creating some of these policies and making decisions without necessarily knowing what the market will provide and what availability there is. She said they want to learn better how to better communicate up and down the food chain, so agriculture can reach those buyers, so they can make informed decisions.
There is still time to register for the 14th Annual Stakeholders Summit of the Animal Agriculture Alliance. Registration closes on Monday, May 4th at 5 pm and there is no on-site registration. Find more details about the summit and how to register online by clicking here.
