King Ranch Institute Working to Meet Industry's Need for Effective and Efficient Ranch Managers

One thing Clay Mathis has learned over the years as director of the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management, is that a good ranch manager is always willing to learn and stay curious. He spoke recently with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about some of the characteristics an effective manager has and what the Institute does to help its students develop those qualities.
"Having a feel for what technologies exist and what's been proven effective and what technology is in front of us - that awareness is really important. We can get overwhelmed by all the things that can increase our profit and productivity," Mathis said. "But it is not additive. No manager has the time to understand it all. Where people find that right information is they have got to have a good network of people - experts in different areas to call and get guidance."
Technology must also be met with a responsible attitude towards stewardship and consumer interest. With growing pressure on the industry to be more transparent and sustainable, Mathis says it is important for managers to be on top of what they are doing on the farm as the produce a wholesome product - with the understanding that there is always someone watching.
"As an industry, we do a great job taking care of animals and land and doing things the right way," he said. "We can't let decisions made or actions taken be misinterpreted."
