OKC West Livestock Sale Raises $59,000 for Oklahoma Cattlemen's Foundation Wildfire Relief Fund

On Wednesday afternoon, OKC West Livestock Auction in El Reno, Okla. hosted a special roll-over sale benefitting farmers and ranchers in northwest Oklahoma that were affected by recent wildfires. The sale began at noon featuring three donated calves that were sold and resold multiple times to collect the charitable bids of buyers participating in Wednesday's sale. Altogether, the three calves raised just under $59,000 - all of which was contributed to the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Foundation's Wildfire Relief Fund. Through this fund, the OCF will distribute 100 percent of the donations back to producers in need, regardless of them being a member of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association or not.
Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays had the chance to speak with Michael Kelsey, executive vice president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, whom commending the generosity of the donors as well as the rural community at large which he says stepped up without hesitation to help out their fellow ranchers. He offered special thanks to OKC West for its part in this fundraiser - a repeat of the one it hosted to help wildfire victims last year.
"Bill Barnhart and his crew are just so generous to extend a helping hand to their friends and neighbors out west," he said. "It's amazing to watch cattlemen jump in and seeing cattlemen helping cattlemen."
While he is very grateful for the funds that have been raised for relief efforts, Kelsey says hay is still an immediate need for affected producers. Hay supplies across the state and region are tight this spring since many producers have nearly exhausted their winter feeding supply. Those with hay to spare that would like to donate are strongly encouraged to do so. For instructions on how to coordinate a hay drop-off, contact the Woodward County Extension Office at 405-590-0106. If you would like to donate financially, you can still do that as well, by placing an add-on bid through OKC West on the cattle sold at Wednesday's sale - call them direct at 405-262-8800 - or give directly to the OCF.
