NCBA Regrets Scott Pruitt's Decision to Resign as EPA Chief, Defends Work as Regulatory Reformer

President Donald Trump broke the news Thursday afternoon of Scott Pruitt's resignation as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, announcing he had accepted it and appointed Andrew Wheeler as Acting EPA Administrator. Pruitt's time at the EPA has been heavily criticized and mired in controversy by opponents of his policies of deregulation at the agency, practically from the very beginning. However, Pruitt also developed a strong following of supporters as well, who welcomed his eagerness to relieve some of the burdens of overregulation that the EPA had imposed under previous administrations. Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays reached out to Colin Woodall of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association's DC office for his reaction to this revelation. "We're extremely disappointed about the announcement that Adm. Pruitt has made the decision to resign," Woodall said. "He has been a great friend to all of us in agriculture, but especially those of us in the cattle industry since he took over as Administrator of the EPA."
Prior to Pruitt's transition into that role, Woodall says the ag industry had always had an adversarial and contentious relationship with the EPA.
"Adm. Pruitt came in and he changed all that," he commented. "He actually wanted to work with us and talk with us about the overregulation of agriculture and we welcomed that. So, we sure hate to see him go."
Pruitt's critics immediately took to social media in rejoicing his departure and painting his tenure at the helm of EPA as having been ridden with scandal. NCBA, however, is defending his legacy as the man who brought reform to the highly controversial Waters of the US (WOTUS) rule.
"We're going to be very loud in our support of the Administrator," Woodall said, asserting that NCBA will continue to push for Pruitt's agenda to repeal and replace WOTUS under the leadership of the next Administrator appointed by the President. "We have to keep in mind that this was also a priority of the President himself. So, regardless of who he puts in to be the next Administrator, we think it will be somebody that is of similar mindset and will continue the legacy of Adm. Pruitt in making sure that they get a WOTUS 2.0 put in place that is very clear in the jurisdiction of where EPA can and cannot regulate and at the same time protect private property rights."
