California Rancher Michael Williams Defends US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef- Saying Group is About Education to Improve Production Practices Across the Beef Chain

He's a true American Cowboy- and he ranches in the shadow of one of the largest metros in the US- and the world. Mike Williams, along with his wife Lynda, started Diamond W Cattle Company with the purchase of ten steers in 2002. They now operate a cow/calf stocker and custom grazing operation on two historic ranches, Rancho Cañada Larga and the Ritter Ranch, comprising of over 18,500 acres in Southern California's Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
Mike is also involved in the California Cattlemen's Association. Mike's involvement with the California Cattlemen's Association began at the local level, with the Ventura County Cattlemen's Association. As his cattle business grew, he recognized that working with other producers was the best, if not the only way, to reduce the negative impact that government regulations, animal rights activists and environmental groups were having on both his operation and the cattle industry as a whole.
Most recently, Mike has been representing the California Cattlemen's Association on the US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays caught up with Williams at the recent Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association Annual Convention, where Williams was on a Rancher Panel- explaining why he believes strongly in what the USRSB is doing.
Hays asked him if he sees any ulterior motives by any of the environmentalist groups who are engaged with the Roundtable- some cattle producers fear that if cattlemen participate in the Roundtable- they are setting up the entire cattle industry to be pawns for those that want to destroy the individualism found in the US beef cattle industry. Williams says he sees no conspiracy- "the reason I went there was to find out what was going on- and I didn't find any conspiracy at all- the US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef can't control anything at all. They just a group sitting there that happens to have members across the supply chain."
Williams says the purpose of the Roundtable, based on what he was experienced being a part of the multi stakeholder group, is "to improve the sustainability of the US Beef- doing that by educating producers- showing them ways they can make their operation better." And Williams adds that up and down the supply chain, the players involved in the Roundtable are looking ways to improve the efficiency of all the players within the beef chain.
