Chief Ag Negotiator Greg Doud Weighs in on the Highly Anticipated Bilateral Trade Talks with the EU
Fri, 19 Oct 2018 10:49:26 CDT
You might call the European Union's ban on beef from cattle that receive naturally occurring growth promoting hormones the original poster child as far as unfair trade practices against the US beef cattle industry goes. The contention between the US and the EU over this practice began back in the 70s and 80s when our current US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer was involved as Staff Director for the Senate Finance Committee for then Chairman Bob Dole. According to Chief Agricultural Negotiator for the USTR's Office, Greg Doud, Ambassador Lighthizer remembers how poorly producers and the US ag industry was treated then and through the past few decades. With the Trump Administration's recent announcement that it will begin negotiations with the EU on forming a bilateral trade agreement, he says the Ambassador is excited to reopen those discussions with EU leaders. Especially since the Eu has already suggested any bilateral talks would not include agricultural trade.
"I think this is one of the reason he took the job, because he is looking forward to that debate and that discussion and he has made it very clear that we are not going to have a conversation with the Europeans that is not going to include agriculture," Doud said. "Agriculture absolutely will be a part of this discussion."
Doud understands how poorly producers have been treated by the EU and says they as a whole are recklessly ignoring the necessity of using all available technologies to ensure the health and well-being of animals and the food supply.
"If you are not absolutely petrified by what the European Union is considering with regard to antibiotics, you better pay attention really quick. I can't understand what their thinking is," he said. "Antibiotics are a critical component of making sure we have healthy animals as well as humans."
Listen to Doud express his outlook on trade talks with the European Union and how agriculture will factor into that discussion, with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, on today's Beef Buzz.
