Angus Dollar Value Index Upgraded to Meet Today's Economic Conditions, Dan Moser Explains

Thu, 30 May 2019 10:58:45 CDT

Angus Dollar Value Index Upgraded to Meet Today's Economic Conditions, Dan Moser Explains At the end of this month, Angus Genetics will be taking their new and improved dollar index values live. Angus Genetics President Dan Moser says these updated dollar values are going to be invaluable to cattle producers using Angus genetics to enhance their herd.

"Dollar values have been around since 2004 and have served the industry very well," he said. "But the organization felt it was time to update the dollar values with improved models and better characterize cattle for today's economic conditions."

According to Moser, these changes were brought about by the implementation of the 2016 long-range strategic Angus plan. The most notable changes will be found in the $M or maternal index, while other changes will facilitate the phase out of index values found to be obsolete and redundant in some cases. Moser says $QG and $YG will be eliminated as they are directly correlated with EPDs already being offered. In addition, the changes will involve values being rounded up to the nearest whole dollar unit, dropping the nickels and pennies. The final changes will be made about a year from now, in June of 2020, when a Balanced Index (currently under development) will be released.

"The final addition that's made to Angus dollar values is the construction of a balanced index that combines both maternal and terminal traits together," Moser explained. "The timeline for that is a little bit longer because we know we need to spend some time and effort on educational programs to get producers up to speed on these values and how to use them."

Listen to Moser talk more about the changes being made to the dollar value index, with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, on today's Beef Buzz.
