Animal Activists Target Christian Faith and Church Communities to Advance Their Meatless Agenda
Fri, 19 Jul 2019 09:44:50 CDT
A new book, “What Would Jesus Really Eat? The Biblical Case for Eating Meat,” looks at what the Bible has to say about using and eating animals from several different perspectives. The book, co-authored by Palm Beach Atlantic University professor and pastor, Wes Jamison, PhD, tackles topics including the challenges to Christian meat-eating, human exceptionalism and humanity’s dominion over other living creatures. In an interview with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, Jamison explained that animal rights activists have attempted to impose their agenda on Christians, targeting their faith and presenting the consumption of meat as immoral in the Biblical sense.

Jamison says activists have actually formed relationships with various churches that have agreed to promote their ideas about the immorality of eating meat. These tend to be what Jamison calls the “old line Protestant denominations,” like Methodism and Episcopalianism. More specifically, churches with centralized authority. He says activists have used Christian beliefs and twisted their historical meanings to align with their own agenda and convince the faithful to join them.
“They have tended to take up a sort of social gospel approach to living in this world – that we are called to do good in order to do well,” Jamison said. “The animal rights, animal welfare message fits very nicely into this idea that how you treat others (as well as animals and the environment) are a reflection of how you treat God. And, it’s very appealing for two reasons.”
One, he says, it allows you to do something that makes you feel good and, two, it abandons the actual scriptural text and what it teaches along with the historical teachings of the text.
“However, if you read the Bible,” Jamison remarked, ‘it’s very clear. You can eat whatever you want – with certain parameters – like don’t be a glutton.”
