CEO of the American Angus Association Mark McCully on His New Role, and the Future of the Angus AssociationFri, 22 Nov 2019 16:26:21 CST
Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays caught up with Mark McCully, Chief Executive Officer of the American Angus Association, at their convention in Reno, Nevada.
McCully took over the role as CEO in June, but he has been a part of the Angus community for a long time, "I was at certified Angus beef prior to this role with the association, of course, certified Angus beef being a subsidiary of the American Angus Association, so I've been in the Angus family for 19 going on 20 years now."
McCully said its been a bit of a role change for him. He went from being focused exclusively on the certified Angus beef brand to now working more on the live cattle side, the breed registry, and working more with the Angus genetics incorporated and Angus media. He's excited about the opportunity, "You know I love this breed. I love this business we're in. I'm very, very passionate about it. It was just an opportunity to grow and take a new chapter."
How is the Angus association doing? McCully said the business is good, "The Angus business is outstanding. The demand for registered Angus seed stock and registered Angus bulls out to commercial outfits continues to be super strong." McCully says they saw average sale prices be as strong as they have been in the past couple of years. They also had their 5th consecutive years of registering over 300,000 head in the breed registries.
Looking forward, McCully says the association will not get complacent with the success, "We are always looking at how we improve our genetics, how we make Angus cattle better, and how we ultimately work better for that commercial customer." McCully goes onto say that they have some exciting things coming up in the future for 2020 as well. "We are starting to look at exciting things like immune response and genetics around disease resistance. We are starting to look more specifically around genetics, around fertility. You know, obviously, health and fertility are two things that are of paramount importance to the overall beef industry. So continuing to grow and evolve those genetic selection tools. Really focused on where we can add value."
