Expanded Genomics Will Have The Most Impact On Cattle Herd Improvements In The Next 20 Years Says Nebraska Rancher Bill Rishel

Wed, 22 Jul 2020 10:51:53 CDT

Expanded Genomics Will Have The Most Impact On Cattle Herd Improvements In The Next 20 Years Says Nebraska Rancher Bill Rishel During the next twenty years cattle producers will see major improvements in their herds thanks to expanded genomic testing says Bill Rishel, legendary angus breeder from North Platte, Neb., a speaker at the recent Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) virtual symposium, reviewed past paradigm shifts to predict the future.

On todayís Beef Buzz, we continue to hear more reflection on how Rishel thinks the future will evolve for the beef industry based on paradigm shifts.

Rishel said it is necessary to look back to recognize paradigm shifts when new ideas become accepted over traditional ways.

In our last two Beef Buzz reports Rishel listed five paradigm shifts. Today we pick up the story with his 6th paradigm shift, Expected Progeny Differences or EPDís.

The first EPDís in the Angus breed was made available in 1988, Rishel said.

We had some things like estimated breeding values but EPDís gave us the ability to remove environmental differences and compare individuals based on true genetic variances, Rishel said.

EPDís are also part of his next paradigm shift, genomic EPDís.

I believe the speed of development and adaption of genomics in our industry as a tool for genetic improvement was unprecedent in my lifetime in this business, he said. He added we have only just begun to scratch the surface of the many ways we can use genomics to improve in the next 20 years.

Twenty years from today we may look back and proclaim the greatest paradigm shift was our ability to accept change and move from a production oriented business to a business providing a great product to consumers and connect with them in a way they better understand what we do, he said.

During the next couple of decades Rishel said we will be astonished at what we will learn about bovine animals due to genomics.

I have no doubt genomics is destined to play a bigger role, he said.

Genomics will have a major impact in assisting us to select genetic selection for more powerful bovine immune systems, Rishel said.

This is especially more important as our industry is losing vital antibiotic protocols, he said.

I also believe we are in the early stages of specifying feeder cattle with certain genomic profiles, he said.

When you look at the cost of production, feed efficiency among top performers is something we will capture, he said.

It is possible feed efficiency at the cow herd level could have a major impact on cow production costs, Rishel said.
