Thu, 06 Aug 2020 08:43:55 CDT
A new five-year plan to help cattle producers improve their industry was unveiled at the recent NCBA summer business meeting in Denver. Kim Brackett, Idaho cattle producer and former chairperson of the Cattlemenís Beef Board, chaired the long-range planning task force and she talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.

The task forceís mission is to ensure the long-term prosperity of the U.S. beef industry by sustainably producing the most trusted, highest quality and consistently satisfying protein for consumers around the world.
The industry comes together every five years and funds a strategic planning project, Brackett said.
The last long-range plan was fantastic, and itís been exciting to see how much growth there was, she said.
Brackett said the group retained most of the core strategies of the previous plan and added several new strategies including one focused on sustainability.
Sustainability has definitely risen in importance in this plan, she said.
We need to measure, document and improve the beef productionís environmental footprint, she said.
Another strategy focused on making animal traceability a reality for the U.S. beef industry.
Traceability has been a long-term goal for the industry, she said.
The Idaho cattle producer said this was a high priority in the previous plan and there is a definite need for animal traceability.
We set a goal of 75 percent of all cattle producing states will participate in a nationwide animal disease traceability program by 2025, she said.
Another member of that long-range committee reporting at the summer conference was Kansas cattleman John Butler.
We need to get producers across the country involved, Butler said.
Several states have started an organization called U.S. CattleTrace, based in Manhattan, Ks., to help producers.
U.S. CattleTrace is an easy nonthreatening way for cattle producers to enroll their animals in the database so if there is a disease outbreak, we can assure consumers beef is safe, Butler said.
We just need to educate producers, Butler said.
