Beef Exports Are Valuable For U.S. Producers Says CattleFax's Randy Blach

U.S. beef exports are increasing and that translates into big dollars for producers says Randy Blach, CEO of CattleFax, a global leader in beef industry research, analysis and information.

Blach was a featured speaker at the recent Feeding Quality Forum sponsored by the Certified Angus Beef program.
Today we are at a situation that about 86 percent of our total beef product is consumed in the United States, Blach said.
But as we look to the future a whole chunk of the world population is outside of the U.S.
Global population is increasing at the rate of about 83 million people a year.
Exports are adding about $350 per head and we expect that number to increase in the coming years, he said.
China holds big potential and the U.S. is a major global supplier.
If we go back to 1990, we were exporting a small percentage of our meat production, Blach said.
Today we are exporting about 18 percent of total meat production worth about $19 billion, Blach said.
All those numbers could increase but the U.S. must work on a couple of issues first, Blach said.
Are we prepared to have a traceable product and have source verified and focus on quality, he said.
If the U.S. expands traceability and sustainability, we could increase export value to $500 per head by the end of this decade, Blach said.
