Oklahoma Rancher and American Angus Assoc. Leader John Pfeiffer Says Better Genetic Information Has Improved Herd Quality
Thu, 05 Nov 2020 08:31:42 CST
Better genetic information has greatly improved the quality of cattle in both registered and commercial herds said John Pfeiffer, Mulhall, Okla., rancher and past president of the American Angus Association, during a recent interview with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.

Pfeiffer said the AngusLink value added program continues to advance helping bring value to cattle with Angus genetics.
AngusLink, is a relatively new cattle program from the American Angus Association that offers a validation of genetic potential for feeder cattle.
We had an AngusLink sale here in Oklahoma, there is interest in Kansas, and we have another sale scheduled Dec. 7 at the Oklahoma National Stockyards, he said.
The Angus Association has also been working on identifying haplotypes to reduce embryonic loss, Pfeiffer said.
We have always known to some extent that when you breed certain bulls to certain cows you have some embryonic loss, Pfeiffer said. By identifying haplotypes, we will cut down on embryonic loss. This will be a tool similar to EPDs.
Genomic EPDS are very important, Pfeiffer said.
The Oklahoma rancher said genomic EPDís are just as important to commercial cattle producers as registered herds.
The input costs of getting the genetic information has come down, in some cases about 50 percent, making it feasible for more producers.
Itís worth it to know the genetic information, Pfeiffer said.
The fact we can tell you what genes are being passed from the grandparents all the way through is a big step, Pfeiffer said.
Genetic improvement tools will be a common topic at this weekendís annual American Angus Association convention in Kansas City. It will be a hybrid version with both virtual and in-person options. Pfeiffer is a delegate for the business session.
