It's Important to Accurately Compare Genomic EPDs For Older and Younger Cattle, Says Kelli Retallick, Angus Genetics, Inc.
Wed, 10 Mar 2021 08:32:05 CST
Accurately comparing genomic EPDs for older and younger cattle is important said Kelli Retallick, director of genetic and genomic programs with Angus Genetics Inc., a subsidiary of the American Angus Association.
On occasion we will get the question from members if we are accurately comparing older and newer genetics, she said.
Retallick explained how the data you submit on your herd contributes to the national genetic evaluation process.
Within the genetic evaluation we start with the performance record on an individual animal, she said.
What we’re doing as geneticists is, we’re parsing apart the genetics and the environmental piece of that performance data point, she said.
The genetic piece is the additive genetic variance and the non-additive genetic variance, she said.
The additive genetic variance is the heritable portion that gets passed down from generation to generation.
The non-additive variance is the things due to cross breeding.
The environmental piece of performance are the things we know and can explain, she said.
Genetic trends are an indicator of the accuracy of the data, helping to verify the EPD that is published by the American Angus Association.
If we are inaccurately assessing the genetic merit between these two groups, we would see an inflation in recent years in trends for things like weaning weight EPDs and a deflation in animals the past few decades, Retallick said.
Analyzing the trends allows producers to map genetic trends year over year and see that the trends line up one on top of the other, she said.
She said there are many variables that can impact the performance of your cattle.
We have the “Big E” or environmental component that plays a huge role in the individual traits we’re measuring, Retallick said.
