Oklahoma National Stockyards Continues to Play a Significant Role For The Cattle Industry

Oklahoma National Stockyards Continues to Play a Significant Role For The Cattle Industry As the world’s largest cattle stocker and feeder market the Oklahoma National Stockyards holds a significant place in the agriculture and business arena. That significance was highlighted during the pandemic when our nation’s food supply was brought to its knees.

On today’s Beef Buzz, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays continues his conversation with Kelli Payne, president of the Oklahoma National Stockyards.

It was a huge surprise for everyone as none of us had been through a situation like that before, Payne said.

We wanted our employees, shippers, and buyers to be safe, she said.

Our partnerships with other associations was really important, she said, crediting the Livestock Marketing Association, Gov. Stitt and Ag Sec. Blayne Arthur for their support.

With the food supply chain in chaos, the CDC declared companies such as the Oklahoma National Stockyards as essential and therefore protocols had to be established and followed.

Thankfully we got through it, Payne said.

Looking ahead, Payne knows the stockyards play a critical role in livestock marketing and plans are underway to strengthen and improve the facilities.

I am very confident in the commission firms as they have wonderful customer service and attention to detail, she said.

True price discovery and the robust bidding in that barn every week are second to none, Payne said.

Payne is encouraged by the growth prospects of adding extra sale events and hosting events such as the Cattlemen’s Congress in January.

We’re all in this together and anytime we can promote the cattle industry we certainly need to join hands as much as we can together, Payne said.

Located in the historic Stockyards City district has it advantages, and Payne said it’s great having neighbors such as the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and others.

We just completed a master plan overlaying that entire area and that should be coming out this summer, Payne said.

This area is so special and being able to market it together as one piece is really a great opportunity for everybody, she added.
