Kent Bacus, NCBA, Says Biden Trade Policies Different Than Under Trump Administration

There are major differences in trade policy with the Biden Administration versus the Trump Administration said Kent Bacus, senior director of international trade and market access for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.
The Biden Administration came in and said we want to review everything the U.S. has been engaged in and see if there are any changes that need to be made, Bacus said.
The momentum that we had moving forward has definitely slowed down, he said.
Bacus said under Trump the policy focused on opening new markets and with Biden this is going to be more focused on consensus building and getting everyone on board before we actually engage in further negotiations.
We may see more opportunities to engage in a multilateral approach, Bacus said.
The NCBA official said it is still early in the Biden Administration and it appears they are taking the old school Democrat approach to discussing worker compensation before they sign any trade agreements.
Meanwhile, other countries continue to negotiate and sign trade agreements.
The United States needs to lead, and we believe there is great potential in markets such as the United Kingdom, Bacus said.
He praised U.S. Trade ambassador Katherine Tai.
She is the smartest person in the room, very sharp and she is definitely going to be an intense negotiator, Bacus said.
We going to see a different style of leadership and she is very well respected, Bacus said, adding NCBA is excited to have her at the negotiating table on behalf of the U.S. cattle industry.
