Randy Blach Believes Better Quality Cattle Brings Great Eating Experience to Consumers
Fri, 20 Aug 2021 09:17:22 CDT
Some of us may not remember how far the U.S. beef industry has come since the 1980s, but Randy Blach, CEO of CattleFax, told Ron Hays he does, and people can look at the U.S. beef industry today as an example of a real-life success story.
Listen to Ron's conversation with Randy here
“For the industry to go through everything (it has) … and look at demand (now) at a 30 to 33-year-high, I hope everybody out in the industry understands what that means,” Blach said. “That tells you we’re doing a lot of right things.”
Producers should be proud of the products they put out because fifteen years ago, Blach said it was a flip of a coin whether a consumer would have a good or bad eating experience while eating U.S. beef. Today, Blach said the industry is approaching 85% choice in prime.
“When they eat a piece of meat of that caliber … it is such a wonderful eating experience,”
When the U.S. beef industry was struggling, before the turn of the century, Blach said producers lost half their demand.
“The only people we could blame was to look in the mirror,” Blach said. “We weren’t doing our job as producers; we didn’t have a focus (and) we didn’t have a plan as an industry.”
Things began to turn around as producers got organized and assessed their situation, Blach said. After producers got organized, they focused efforts on making their product (beef) better through research, analysis and data, Blach said. They also learned how to use the chuck or round to bring better plates to American dinner tables, he added.
“Those were all key decisions for our industry that are enjoying the benefits of today,” Blach said.
To Blach, it is no coincidence that this year was the 35th anniversary of the Beef CheckOff program.
