Dan Halstrom Predicts 2021 Will Be a Record Year for U.S. Beef Exports

Thu, 09 Sep 2021 11:15:01 CDT

Dan Halstrom Predicts 2021 Will Be a Record Year for U.S. Beef Exports Around the world, beef is buzzing! As U.S. beef exports continue to reach record highs, industry experts predict a strong end of the year could put 2021 in the history books. President and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation Dan Halstrom. Today, he told Ron Hays that beef export numbers are phenomenal.

July's beef export numbers verified the momentum beef exports saw in the first half of the year, Halstrom said.

"We have broad-based demand around the world for beef," Halstrom said. "I think we are setting up for a good finish to the year."

Today's beef export numbers are a far cry from last year's. Export numbers are 45% higher than last year's, according to Halstrom. He said there are a lot of drivers pushing this night and day difference.

"Consumption is solid around the world," Halstrom said.

As countries begin to go back to some version of normal, their U.S. beef import numbers have risen, Halstrom said. For instance, in Latin American countries seeing tourism increase as COVID restrictions lift, beef demand has surprised Halstrom, he said.

"Mexico and Central and South America are really strong," Halstrom said. "Honestly, a bit stronger than I thought (export numbers) would be."

Along with our neighboring countries to the south, Asian countries continue to be huge importers of U.S. beef, particularly China, Japan, Korea and Twain, with export numbers to Korea up 17%, according to Halstrom.

"China is just rockin' and rollin' on a lot of fronts," Halstrom said. "We're seeing very good retail demand - and the food service is strong."

Halstrom said it is hard to say how the year will end, but he said he believes a new record number of exported beef will be met.
