Dr. Jody Wade's Advice to Cattle Producers is Stay Ahead of BRD
Wed, 15 Sep 2021 13:13:59 CDT
Across Oklahoma, producers are preparing their spring-born calves for weaning as summer fades to fall. Weaning processes can be stressful on cattle, which opens newly weaned calves to illness, specifically Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD). Ron Hays sat down with Jody Wade, professional services veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim, to discuss best practices so producers can stay ahead of BRD.

BRD is defined as a "disease complex," meaning it is caused by a variety of pathogens and contributed to by stress. BRD affects the lower respiratory tract as pneumonia or the upper respiratory tract as rhinitis, tracheitis or bronchitis.
"BRD has been a huge focus (in the industry)," Wade said. "If we have any sickness as (cattle) go through that food chain, it costs everybody money."
Wade said the virus is not going to go away. The best way managers can combat its presence in their herds is to stay on top of it and be picky when buying cattle.
"Those calves will do well if we can get that done," Wade said. "Vaccinate like we are supposed to, properly precondition those calves, let them get two rounds of vaccines in them."
If a producer is concerned about a calf, Wade said they should immediately pull it from the herd and treat it with strong antibiotics to knock out the illness. For producers who have calves that are predisposed to respiratory disease, Wade said they had better be watching out for illness all the time.
Wade said source plays a big role when it comes to buying healthy cattle vs. stressed, sickly ones.
"If you are buying a lot of calves that have been comingled with multiple farms around the country, that is a recipe for disaster," Wade said. "It is like a child's daycare - they just pass things around to each other."
In Wade's opinion, the safest option to buy healthy, fuss-free calves is straight from the ranch. He said those calves have most likely been managed and taken care of.
"Source is a huge deal," Wade said. "Coming through the sale barn, really lightweight, probably weaned too early - those are the ones we really worry about."
