John Stika Believes the Pandemic Shows Consumers Want High Quality Beef When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the globe, people began cooking at home more often. Now that things are opened back up, for the most part, it looks like people are still doing a lot of home cooking, according to John Stika, president of Certified Angus Beef.

"There is no doubt that COVID and everything that surrounds it has been a challenge for the entire beef business," Stika said. "But as we begin to come out of it, I think if you are in the beef business, you have to be excited about what we are seeing in beef demand among consumers."

The industry is as high-quality as it has ever been, Stika said. There is no denying that beef is enjoying some well-deserved love. Finally, efforts are paying off from 35 years of Beef Checkoff marketing, record-high exports to Asia and South America are boosting beef and new environmental reports show beef production is not the climate-wrecker scientists formerly thought it was.

"We always talk about price in relation to value," Stika said. "We have put a product out there, perhaps at the highest prices ever and we are moving more volume - to me that is demand growth."

From a Certified Angus Beef brand standpoint, Stika said they are set up to have their second-best year, just behind 2019. He said they have momentum in the right direction and if COVID taught him anything when it comes to Certified Angus Beef, consumers want that product.

"I think we have a generation that learned something about cooking at home," Stika said. "As foodservice has opened back up, we haven't seen retail give all that business up to foodservice."

In Stika's eyes, all that equates to significant growth for beef demand.
