NCBA's Josh White Says Beef Quality Assurance Produces Better Beef

Mon, 20 Sep 2021 10:35:40 CDT

NCBA's Josh White Says Beef Quality Assurance Produces Better Beef The Beef Quality Assurance has been helping cattle producers keep herds healthy and consumers safe since the late 1970s. Like any successful program, BQA has evolved with producer and consumer needs, instrumental in recent successes in re-building beef demand. Josh White, executive director of producer education for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, talked with Ron Hays about how BQA is beginning to get the consumer attention it deserves.

“It has never been more important to make sure your BQA certification is up to date to you can be counted in those who are standing up saying, ‘hey, we are doing the right thing by our cattle and our land,’” White said. “That message is being carried by (the NBCA) and others in the supply chain, all the way to consumers.”

Recent research shows consumers value BQA standards, not only for the quality they enjoy when eating beef, but that the program is a grassroots effort to keep people, animals and the environment safe.

“The program has evolved,” White said. “We have evolved the program to more of total management - anything that has to do with beef safety, beef quality or humane care of animals.”

Originally, White said BQA was feed-yard focused, working toward implementing basic quality and safety measures like, moving injection sites from the hip to the front-end and reducing any antibiotic residues found in beef. Today, BQA ties all that and more together, including sustainability practices.

Producers who take the time to become BQA certified do it voluntarily. Through BQA programs, producers recognize the economic value of committing to quality beef production at every level - not just at the feedlot or packing plant, according to the BQA website.
