Help Newly Arrived Cattle Recover Quickest by Providing High-Energy Feed

Wed, 06 Oct 2021 10:09:16 CDT

Help Newly Arrived Cattle Recover Quickest by Providing High-Energy Feed When stocker cattle arrive at their new home they are stressed from travel and most likely have not relaxed enough to properly eat or drink water for several days. That creates a negative energy balance, which puts cattle's health at risk. In the past, producers have offered those cattle large amounts of roughage to help them get back on their hooves and feeling good.

Recently, Dr. John Richeson, professor of beef cattle feedlot management at West Texas A&M University, was at Kansas State's Beef Stocker Field Day with new research that shows large amounts of roughage may not be the best way to help stressed cattle recover the quickest. Radio Oklahoma's Ron Hays sat down with Richeson to get the Beef Buzz.

"Specifically, the high-risk animal - those cattle typically come in stressed, transported and in a negative energy balance because they have not consumed both water and feed properly for several days, through the marketing process," Richeson said.

He said all that sets up a dilemma for producers in how to manage the nutrition of those newly received calves. In the past, the resolution has been to provide large amounts of roughage, a tactic that certainly has some wisdom behind it, according to Richeson.

"We are looking at different ways, different techniques and different types of rations to provide those cattle that may be a better alternative," Richeson said. "In a nutshell, that would be providing a much higher energy ration."

Researchers were in a paradox, Richeson said.

"We want them to come to the bunk and consume feed," Richeson said. "Roughage really does a good job of that, but yet, you dilute the energy of the ration if you are using a really high-roughage ration, typically."

Richeson and other researchers at WTAMU found that high-energy rations helped high-risk calves correct that negative energy balance quicker than high-roughage ration.
