Why Maine-Anjou Cattle are Popular In and Out of the Show Ring

Thu, 13 Jan 2022 18:32:36 CST

Why Maine-Anjou Cattle are Popular In and Out of the Show Ring Among the 25 unique breeds attending the 2022 Cattlemen's Congress, Maine-Anjou cattle arrived early in the show's schedule and have done well. The breed was present in all the supreme drives and took the title of Supreme Champion Junior Female (pictured). You can see more of that heifer, shown by Raimey Yocham, by visiting the Cattlemen's Congress Facebook page.

The Oklahoma Farm Report's own KC Sheperd spoke with Blake Nelson, executive vice president of the American Maine-Anjou Association, last weekend about the breed. He said a lot has changed for the French-founded breed, but some key qualities remain.

"We too, are predominately black-hided now, in a way it is nice," Nelson said.

Originally a dual-purpose breed raised for milk production and beef, their thriftiness caught the attention of cattle breeders in Europe early on. Today, the cattle are often referred to as a feedlot manager's dream!

"For folks who feed out cattle, if you are wanting to increase ribeye area and your overall yields, our bulls can really do that," Nelson said. "We have always been noted at a muscle breed."

Nelson gave credit for the growing success of the breed to its breeders on making Maine-Anjou cows better mothers.

"We have a program now called Maine-Angus, where we take the power of the Maine with the maternal (abilities) of the Angus, put them together and you have an ideal beef animal," Nelson said.

Another desirable trait of Maine-Anjou cattle is their docile temperament, according to Nelson.

"Even as we have made them black, (the breed) is known for docility," Nelson said. "I think that is one of the reasons our junior program is highly successful."
