Jarold Callahan Explains Good Bulls VS. Great Bulls Ahead of the Express Ranch Spring Bull Sale

Raising bulls can be a lot like raising kids; each child or each set of bulls is a little bit different than the previous one. With spring just around the corner, the spring bull sale season is about to kick off. The event you are not going to want to miss is the Express Ranches Spring Bull Sale.
Jarold Callahan, CEO of Express Ranches, told Ron Hays, the senior reporter for the Oklahoma Farm Report, that he is excited about this year's set of bulls. The sale is set to take place March 4 at the ranch in Yukon, Okla. where 433 Angus bulls and 51 Hereford bulls will be sold in lot order. See the details in this year's sale catalog.
"As you have to do for your commercial clientele, we are constantly sampling new, young genetics so we have something different and hopefully better to sell them," Callahan said. "It will be the first big sets of bulls by XAR Stock Fund and EXAR Grenade. Those bulls look to be extremely good."
Another group Callahan said he has his eye on are sons by EXAR Jet Fuel.
Express Ranches bull goals are to produce good bulls, which to them translates into sound bulls with good dispositions and growth performance while combining that with good genomics and EPDs.
"We try to keep a moderate-to-low birth weight on a lot of the bulls and then we want explosive growth," Callahan said. "We want the guys who buy our bulls to have big weaning weights and whoever they sell them to after weaning, we want them to have good feedlot performance with good conversion. When you finally hang them on the rail, we want them to get into the upper two-thirds of the choice grade, with a portion of them in the prime so that folks can reap the benefits of investing in better genetics."
Callahan said ultimately, Express Ranches wants to offer an overall superior "package" with each bull they sell. He said his definition of a good bull is one that stays in the pasture, breeds cows and does not cause any problems. A very good bull does all that while adding additional value to the calves, he added.
Callahan also talked about some essential EPDs to take into consideration as producers begin to search for their next herd sire.
