Animal Ag Activists Facing Legal Consequences in 2022 for Animal Theft and More

The Animal Ag Alliance continues to monitor the war between animal agriculture and activists who have stepped over the line and have been charged with criminal wrongdoing. Hannah Thompson-Weeman, the soon to be President and CEO of the Alliance, talked earlier this year with Oklahoma Farm Report's Ron Hays about multiple cases that may play out here in 2022. "One thing we are watching in 2022 are a number of trials involving some of those extreme activists- they have been very brazen about breaking the law."
One case actually was concluded right at the end of 2021- Thompson-Weeman says "in December (2021) the first of those trials was held in North Carolina. and the activist in question was found guilty of two felony charges for stealing a goat in 2018." She reports that the jury came back with a conviction very quickly and that is important because the defense this activist used is one that will likely be used again is what is called a "necessity defense." What is that? Thompson-Weeman says its "that the conditions on farms and ranches are so dire that it's necessary for them to take the law into their own hands and break it and steal animals which of course we know is not the reality. They are just opposed to what we are doing in general- doesn't matter how well we are doing it- doesn't matter what the standards- if at the end of the day, if we are using animals for food- they are opposed to that."
Hays and Thompson-Weeman also talked about the educational training programs that the Alliance has developed- both for college students but also for farmers and ranchers and others involved in animal agriculture. The college program is "College Aggies Online" while the industry professionals program is "Animal Ag Allies." The College Program's next session will happen this coming September, while the Animal Ag Allies will begin their next group this coming June.
