Oklahoma Cattlewomen's Beef Advocacy Contest for Youth Winner, Morley Griffith
Tue, 12 Apr 2022 15:28:25 CDT
On Friday, April 8, the Oklahoma Cattlewomen’s beef advocacy contest for youth took place in El Reno, Okla. In two interviews, contestants from grades 5th-12th were required to explain beef production, present the beef community in a positive manner, know the nutritional benefits of beef, and more.
Morley Griffith of the Dale FFA Chapter is Senior Champion beef advocate of the contest. During Griffith’s winning interview, she said the has been involved in the cattle industry since the age of four.
Griffith said her involvement started in a show program, but as she has grown older, her dad and family have involved her in their registered commercial cow/calf operation.
“I deem myself the herd manager, where I am in charge of vaccine protocols and making breed decisions for our cow/calf operation,” Griffith said.
Her family’s cow/calf operation, Griffith said, feeds directly back into their show program, where she has been able to see bred and owned cattle in the show ring be successful. It is a really rewarding experience, she added.
Griffith said she serves on the Oklahoma Junior Cattleman’s board and is the president of the Oklahoma Club Calf Association.
“I believe in the beef industry and what it does for youth, so I am definitely proud to be a part of it,” Griffith said.
When asked what beef cattle producers’ story is to ensure consumers that their food is being produced humanely, Griffith said consumers first need to know what beef producers must go through to bring their product to the table.
“They are faced with the ever-growing challenge of feeding and clothing a growing population with fewer and fewer resources,” Griffith said. “I know that my show cattle, specifically, are treated better than I treat myself, but also, beef producers outside of the show cattle world take the right protocols.”
Griffith said beef is desirable because is it easily accessible, affordable and high in protein. It provides nutrients for kids and adults to grow and provides zinc, B12 and other natural nutrients used by the body to be active daily.
“We believe in our farmers and ranchers that produce the beef, and I find it easy to advocate for our beef producers because of how much work they put in,” Griffith said. “I think people can recognize that and see that, so they trust the process and we should continue the cycle.”
Morley won a scholarship from the Oklahoma Beef Council worth $700 for winning the Senior Division.
