OCA Executive Vice President Michael Kelsey Believes Attorney General O'Connor is a Good Fit for Agriculture

Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, features comments from Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association Executive Vice President, Michael Kelsey, as he talks about the OCA's support for Attorney General John O'Connor in the upcoming election. Kelsey also talks about a political part of the upcoming 70th Annual Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association Convention and Trade Show on July 22 and 23 in Norman, OK.
The race for Attorney General has received an abundance of attention from the agriculture community in Oklahoma. Attorney General O'Connor, who is being opposed in the Republican primary by Gentner Drummond, has won the approval of some of the largest players in Oklahoma Agriculture, including the OCA.
"Back in our May board meeting, we went over the constitutional candidates- the statewide candidates- and our board unanimously supported Attorney General O'Connor," Kelsey said.
At the recent endorsement media conference, held by O'Connor, Kelsey said, "He invited us to come, and we wanted to be here."
Kelsey said the OCA appreciates that O'Connor chose the stockyards for his endorsement setting, which Kelsey believes says a lot about O'Connor.
"It has been super good to work with him," Kelsey said. "He has been very receptive on many different fronts whether it is the federal overreach that we are seeing within the Federal Government, Waters of the U.S., etc., plus even on the state level we have approached him about some county issues regarding tax policy and law and he has been very helpful in helping us understand those."
Kelsey said O'Connor has been cooperative and has gone out of his way to work with the OCA. Being chosen unanimously by the OCA's board, Kelsey said O'Connor was a good fit.
"We probably spent less time on this race than we did in any of the others because our board was just so in-tune with Attorney General O'Connor," Kelsey said. "It was a good fit for us, he is a good man, and he will do a great job at Attorney General and so it made sense."
John O'Connor will be facing off against Gentner Drummond for the GOP nomination to be Attorney General. The winner of that race will face Libertarian Lynda Steele in the November election. Meanwhile, 13 Republicans are running for the opportunity to fulfill the last two years of Senator Jim Inhofe's term in the U.S. Senate.
It is almost certain there will be a Republican runoff in the race to fill Senator Jim Inhofe's term and OCA plans to bring those top two Republicans to their convention for a special forum in the third week of July.
"We are probably most excited about the sense that we are right in the middle of the primary and the runoff," Kelsey said. "We are going to extend an invitation to the two Senate candidates, Republican candidates, who make the runoff and so whoever those two people are, we want them to have a forum. Not a debate, but a forum, and introduce them to our members."
Kelsey said the OCA also plans to invite sectors of the agriculture community such as the Oklahoma Farm Bureau and American Farmers and Ranchers to participate in the conversation.
"Registration is open, so you can go to our website, and you can get registered," Kelsey said. "The hotel registration is open as well. That is the easiest way to get that done. We do encourage pre-registration."
