Montie Soules, CEO of the American Shorthorn Association, Promotes America's First Breed

Wed, 15 Jun 2022 10:23:29 CDT

Montie Soules, CEO of the American Shorthorn Association, Promotes America's First Breed Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, is back with the Executive Secretary and CEO of the American Shorthorn Association, Montie Soules. Soules gives an update on the state of the industry as it relates to the American Shorthorn, Cattlemen's Congress and talks about the Shorthorn breed, itself.

"Our breed has really been flourishing to be quite honest," Soules said. "Even during the COVID times, the prices our cattle were getting were up."

During COVID, ASA registrations were down a little, which was to be expected, Soules said, but the prices of the cattle and the auction sales were still up and most of them were online because nobody could go anywhere.

"As we broke out of COVID the last fiscal year, our registrations were up as high as they have ever been," Soules said. "Actually, they may have been at record since the last ten or 15 years."

New membership, Soules said, has been continuously growing every year for the last five to six years. The Shorthorn breed has received a lot of positive acceptance, Soules said, and they are currently celebrating 150 years of existence of the American Shorthorn Association.

"The American Shorthorn Association is the oldest beef breed in the United States," Soules said. "America's first is what we promote it as."

The ASA has been making progressive strides, Soules said, including the breed's attendance at Cattlemen's Congress, which has been beneficial to the promotion of the breed.

"Our breed has really been doing well," Soules said. "Our Junior National numbers have been up every year for the last three years. We can't be anything but positive about what's going on."

Soules said the Shorthorn breed is seeing a lot higher acceptance in commercial trade and bull sales. There are more bulls being sold and transferred each year, he added, which is a real positive fact for the breed to have.

"A lot of people may not realize, but Shorthorn cattle kind of got overlooked and we are a British breed, and we are actually the first British breed," Soules said. "There are approximately 53 other purebred breed registries in the world that arrived as a result of having shorthorn influence and Shorthorn cattle were the base of those breed's beginning."

Soules said Cattlemen's Congress is a good addition to the calendar of livestock shows the Shorthorn breed attends throughout the year.

"I think it is going to last quite a while," Soules said.

Coming up on year three, Soules said Cattlemen's Congress is standing on its own financially which shows promise of longevity. The scheduling of the show fits perfectly for the Shorthorn breed, Soules added, and the show is in a great location.

"For the Shorthorn breed, the location is a lot more of an advantage for us as Oklahoma, which has a large number of Shorthorn cattle in it and a large number of junior members," Soules said. "Texas is one of our bigger states of course, so that is close by, and it's not far from the Midwest where we have a lot of our membership."

Cattlemen's Congress being placed at a central location for cattle producers, Soules said, puts the show at an advantage.

"I see it being positive," Soules said.
