Wheat Harvest Starting Up in Southwestern Counties
Wed, 27 May 2009 16:38:04 CDT
Harvest of the 2009 Hard Red Winter Wheat Crop is in its early stages in southwest Oklahoma, according to Mike Schulte, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission. Schulte tells us that several elevators are reporting activity in Jackson, Tillman and Cotton Counties as of Wednesday afternoon.
Among the reports that Schulte shared with us:
An elevator in Grandfield reports taking about 13,000 bushels thus far, with moisture readings from 12.5% to 14.6% and early yield estimates of 8 to 10 bushels per acre.
One early load has made it to an elevator in Frederick- test weight estimated there at 59.4 pounds per bushel with a yield of 7.5 bushels per acre.
Most of the wheat coming in thus far is either Jagger or Overly.
We also talked with Mike about many farmers electing to bale their fields for hay in central and northern areas of the state.
