Canola Harvest Ends for 2010- We Show You Pictures- Part One
Mon, 28 Jun 2010 22:46:07 CDT
Winter Canola Harvest 2010 in Oklahoma has ended- and we were in Grant County to witness it on Monday, June 28, 2010. The President of the Great Plains Canola Association, Jeff Scott of Lamont-Pond Creek, had held back three passes in a field of DeKalb Roundup Ready Canola this past weekend- and cut it as he explained the harvest process to three members of the media- including yours truly.
Our top picture is of Jeff in his Cat Combine rolling through one of those passes. This Canola was pushed several days earlier- had been rained on and had lodged all the way down to the ground. The second picutre is a close up of the pods that are ready for harvest- the third picture gives you a feel of how "flat' the canola looked before he fired up the combine.
The fourth picture in this series is from the Cab of the combine- looking straight down as you can see the sickle bar all the way down just a few inches off of the ground. In the fifth picture on this page- you can see the canola being picked up on the left hand side of the header from inside the cab, while the bottom picture on this page shows a green strip of volunteer canola that has sprouted. This field had received 65% hail damage several weeks back- but was still yielding easily 40 bushels per acre. The volunteer canola was coming up from the pods that were shattered in the hail storm.
These pictures show some of the last canola to be harvested in Oklahoma for 2010- this in Grant County on the operation of Jeff Scott
