Aromatic Cedar Association to Discuss Economic Benefits of Red Cedar

Aromatic Cedar Association to Discuss Economic Benefits of Red Cedar
Oklahoma has a long history with Eastern red cedar trees. This species is unique in the fact that not only is it invasive, but also is native. An easy fix for control is to burn areas infested with Eastern red cedar, but those interested in turning a profit can turn to the Aromatic Cedar Association (ACA), which is holding its annual convention Oct. 27 in Fairview.

"If you want to know what you can do, or what is being done regarding this invasive species, you need to attend this meeting," said Paul Todd, ACA president. "People can come learn about the species and the opportunities that are available relative to cedar."

The ACA is an educational program designed to educate the public, as well as producers, on the best way to add value to an underutilized product. The convention will provide a common forum for the discussion of Eastern red cedar, and similar species, with emphasis on utilization and product marketing.

This year's meeting will feature six presentations from industry leaders and experts as well as indoor tabletop displays for participant information needs. One of the presenters is Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Forestry Specialist Craig McKinley.

McKinley's segment will focus on the various products that can be derived from red cedar and what opportunities lie in store.

"Red cedar products include cedar oil, solid wood and energy," McKinley said. "The good news is these products can all be produced from a single tree."

The October meeting will emphasize the industrial opportunities that are available in the region and shed some light on the possibility of economic benefits. Also, legislative issues, using cedar for energy, cedar oil production and bidding on government projects will be discussed.

Recent legislation (HB2686) created the Eastern Red cedar Registry Board to connect red cedar owners and business operators. State Rep. Richard Morrissette will be giving updates on the board's activities as well as discussing upcoming legislation.

Registration is $25 and includes coffee and donuts from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. before the program begins. A barbecue lunch and break refreshments also will be provided. Spouses can attend for an additional $12.50.

"The public is not only welcome, but they are encouraged to come because they need to know what's going on," said Todd.

The meeting will take place at the Civic Center, 206 E. Broadway, in Fairview. For additional information, McKinley can be contacted by email at craig.mckinley@okstate.edu, or by phone at 405-744-8065.
