OSU's Kim Anderson Monitoring Argentina and Wheat Prices Shouldn't Influence Grazing Decisions
Wed, 25 Nov 2015 12:14:38 CST
The recent elections in Argentina could have a big impact on the U.S. agriculture industry as exports from Argentina are expected to increase. The new President elected over the weekend has promised to eliminate Argentina's export taxes for grains. That's a 23 percent tax on wheat, a 25 percent export tax on corn and 35 percent tax on soybeans. On this weekend's edition of SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson said Argentine farmers have been holding onto their commodities in order to hedge against inflation. Argentine farmers are estimated to be holding around $8 billion worth of soybeans in protest of the export tariffs and currency regulations. Anderson said about one third of last year's record soybean crop remains in storage.
Elimination of Argentina's export taxes could also impact wheat acres planted next year. Anderson is hearing Argentina's wheat acres could increase by as much as 31 percent. While part of this has been factored into the market, Anderson believes in the short run it will have a negative impact on the futures market.
SUNUP's Dave Deken also asks Anderson about whether the price of wheat should determine whether farmers graze out their crop instead of harvesting for grain. Click or tap on the LISTEN BAR below for the full interview.
This week on SUNUP, we travel to the Wheat Pasture Research Unit near Marshall with Gerald Horn to learn about dual-purpose wheat for pasture.
- In the Mesonet report, Al Sutherland talks about why El Nino occurs in the Pacific Ocean and how it can impact our weather.
- Kim Anderson says wheat prices should not influence cattle grazing decisions.
