Food Policy Action Says President's Budget Proposal Filled with Misplaced Priorities

Tue, 23 May 2017 17:38:52 CDT

Food Policy Action Says President's Budget Proposal Filled with Misplaced Priorities Food Policy Action released the following statement from its acting executive director Willy Ritch in response to President Trump's budget proposal unveiled today by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget:

"A budget proposal is about priorities for our county-and the budget the President released today is filled with misplaced priorities that would be terrible for America's food system, our people and our nation.

"Under the President's budget, families, seniors, and farmers who are already struggling would find it harder to put food on the table and make ends meet. This proposal would mean more consumers sickened by unsafe food and polluted water and new parents would find it harder to buy healthy, locally produced fruits and vegetables for their children. This budget is also a bad deal for rural America by eliminating conservation and rural development programs that protect our vast precious lands, waterways and watersheds and promote economic growth in rural America.

"We call on Congress to reject this budget proposal and stop this radical agenda in its tracks."

Food Policy Action opposed Mick Mulvaney's confirmation to lead the Office of Management and Budget because his record in Congress demonstrated that the health, safety, and fairness of our food system were not his priorities. FPA's strong concerns that his leadership would impose similar priorities and harmful cuts on the federal budget process and administration of federal programs have unfortunately been proven correct.
