Healthcare's Important, Sure… But When Will Trump Make Good on His Promise to Kill the Death Tax?

Danielle Beck of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association's Washington, D.C. office, files tax issues on behalf of US cattle producers. Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, caught up with Beck recently in D.C. to find out where the country stands on tax reform currently and if promises made by President Trump regarding changes to the tax code are likely to be delivered on. Specifically, Hays inquired about the permanent repeal of the Estate Tax, or what is commonly known as the Death Tax.

"President Trump is a businessman. Healthcare is something that he made a promise on and he's working hard to deliver on that but I don't think that anyone in the White House is nearly as excited about healthcare as they are about tax reform," Beck said. "Tax reform lays strongly in his wheelhouse."

While tax reform has taken a bit of a backseat to healthcare since the election, though, it is still very much a priority of the President's and of Congress, says Beck. Since the inauguration, she reports the administration has been working with Congress to come up with a suitable plan. She believes some sort of package may emerge this fall, after the August recess. NCBA is optimistic this go around will not be a repeat of Congress' repeal of the Death Tax that was only temporary in its execution.

"I don't think our producers can live with a temporary repeal," she said. "The House is still intent upon moving forward with their blueprint reform and the Senate I think has been weighing in slowly but cautiously - much like the Senate does. It's been interesting to watch this process unfold."

Listen to Hays and Beck discuss the potential for full, permanent repeal of the Death Tax and other tax related reforms in the pipeline that could impact beef producers, on today's Beef Buzz.
