Oklahoma Wheat Growers Name Jeff Wright as Their 2018 Wheat Advocate of the YearSun, 12 Aug 2018 20:47:48 CDT
Jeff Wright was named the 2018 Wheat Advocate at the recent Oklahoma Wheat Growers’ Association annual meeting on August 9 in El Reno. Jeff is the Coordinator for Production & Operations of the Oklahoma Foundation Seed Stocks at Oklahoma State University, where his objective is to take a small quantity of breeder seed that is supplied by OSU plant breeding programs and increase the quantity of the seeds by producing the crop under specifically controlled field conditions. These seeds or other vegetative materials are grown, harvested, conditioned, bagged and marketed as Foundation Seed to Oklahoma Certified Seed Growers as a means of getting new seed varieties dispersed throughout Oklahoma. Under Jeff’s guidance, Oklahoma Foundation Seed Stocks annually produces an average of 17,000 to 18,000 bushels of seed for wheat, up from an average of 10,000 to 11,000 just a decade ago. Much of this growth is attributable to Jeff’s focus on customer service and his high level of coordination and involvement with OSU’s Wheat Improvement Team.
Jeff is a graduate of Cameron University and before coming to Oklahoma State University in 2007 worked for Dekalb Swine Breeders (Sedalia MO) and Garst Seed Company (Hereford TX). Since he was “big enough” to help his Granny Annie (now deceased) on her farm, you could always find Jeff on a tractor. Agriculture has been his whole life. According to his wife, Tracy, the saying “born and raised on a tractor” fits Jeff perfectly.
Jeff has also been awarded the Charter “Platinum Partner” by Oklahoma Genetics, Inc. and Charter “Extend the Legacy” awarded by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission.
The Oklahoma Wheat Growers’ Association is very honored to recognize Jeff Wright for his advocacy of the Oklahoma wheat industry.
