Checking In on the Beef Checkoff - Former CBB Chairman Brett Morris on OBC's Role in the Checkoff

Checking In on the Beef Checkoff is a new series the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and the Oklahoma Farm Report is proud to offer in partnership with the Oklahoma Beef Council. Over the next several weeks, we invite you to join us as we highlight some of the efforts being undertaken by the Beef Checkoff to promote beef on behalf of producers. This week, Ninnekah, Okla. producer and former chairman of the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion Board Brett Morris, current member of the Oklahoma Beef Council, visits with us about the OBC’s relationship with the national Checkoff program and other state Beef Councils. Listen to Morris speak with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about this coordination, by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.

According to Morris, the OBC is a critical component of the National Checkoff, responsible for collecting the dollar per head of every animal sold in Oklahoma for in-state Beef Council activities- and also facilitating the transfer of half of those total collections to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board which oversees the execution of national and international research, education, promotion and informational programs. Morris points out that the CBB, like the Oklahoma Beef Council, is made up of everyday beef producers. Morris describes the OBC as the national program’s “boots on the ground.”

“The Oklahoma Beef Council works very closely with the National Beef Checkoff program and other state Beef Councils to make sure we’re making the most effective, efficient use of the entire Checkoff dollar,” he said. “We utilize national tools and coordinate messages to make sure the Checkoff dollars go as far as they can in building consumer demand for Oklahoma beef.”
