Oklahoma Wheat Commission Reports the 2019 Harvest is Nearing the Finish Line at 96% CompleteTue, 09 Jul 2019 11:47:35 CDT
Oklahoma Wheat harvest is in the final stretch and has wrapped up in most places. Producers are still having challenges in parts of North Central Oklahoma along the I-35 corridor around Tonkawa, Ponca City, Blackwell and Braman areas due to heavy moisture this past week. Producers are also wrapping up in the Panhandle regions with most areas hopeful to finish by the end of the week. While it has been an extremely challenging year across the state to get harvest completed, most areas had favorable yields, with satisfactory test weights, and decent protein levels. The Oklahoma Wheat Commission (OWC) is calling this 2019 harvest to be 96 percent complete and this will be the final harvest report conducted by the OWC for this season. Based on reports from elevator managers and producers, test weights will be in the 58 lb. to 59 lb. per bushel range. The crop was later to maturity in many parts and allowed several producers to get part of the crop harvested before some of the test weights were impacted. The state was also fortunate to have more favorable conditions in parts of Southern and Western Oklahoma where many locations had 59 lb. to 60 lb. per bushel test weight averages. Yields across the state also have been favorable with several reports of wheat making in the mid 40ís to mid 50ís. Protein quantities and qualities have been higher than expected and are trending higher in Oklahoma as harvest has progressed North. While proteins have ranged all over the board, kernel size and protein quality has been favorable. The Oklahoma protein average for the state is being reported in a range of 11.1 to 11.5 percent for this 2019 crop.
Enid- Harvest in this region on the West side of town is 97 percent complete and East of Enid is 90 percent complete. Proteins have ranged all over the board but have been trending higher at 11.2 to 11.6 percent for the average. Test weights are varying depending on variety and location with 58 lbs. per bushel as the average. Yields have ranged from the mid 30ís to the mid 60ís.
Pond Creek- Harvest is 90 percent complete. Test weights average between 57 lbs. to 58 lbs. per bushel. Yields in this region have ranged from the mid 30ís to the mid 60ís. Proteins fall between 11 percent to 11.4 percent as an average for the area.
Helena/Goltry- This region has performed extremely well with test weights averaging 60 to 61 lbs. per bushel. Proteins have also been favorable with many reports in the 12 to 13 percent range. Yields are ranging from the mid 30ís to mid 70ís. Harvest in this area is 90 to 95 percent complete.
Perry/Tonkawa/Kildare- Harvest has moved forward in this area but is still only 85 percent complete. The test weights vary tremendously with some reports in the low 50ís. The region is hopeful they can finish with a 56 lb. per bushel average. Yields are reported from being in the mid 30ís to mid 50ís. Proteins ranged from 10.5 percent to 13 percent when harvest stopped Thursday due to rain with some areas receiving up to 2 inches of moisture.
Afton/Miami- Harvest is reported as being 95% complete. Test weights dropped significantly, after all the moisture received in the area this harvest season. This region is looking at a 56 lb. per bushel test weight average. Yields have not been as favorable due to the excessive moisture received the last part of the harvest season. Most of the wheat is being reported as making in the mid 30ís. Proteins have dropped a bit with averages of 10.6 to 10.8 being reported.
Burlington- Harvest is 98 percent complete. Test weights are ranging from 56 lbs. to 61 lbs. per bushel, depending on the location and variety. Yields are being reported from the mid 40s to low 50ís. Protein averages were ranging from 11 percent to 11.2 percent.
Shattuck- Harvest is reported at 90 percent complete. Test weights are reported to be at a 60 lbs. per bushel average with yields ranging from the mid 30ís to the mid 60ís depending on location and variety.
Hooker- Harvest in this area is 95 percent complete. Yields on the dryland and irrigated wheat have ranged from 50 to 75 bushels per acre depending on the variety and location. This year, producers are not seeing much yield difference between the irrigated and dryland wheat. Test weights are ranging from 61 to 63 lbs. per bushel with proteins moving up slightly with an 11.1 average.
Texhoma- Harvest is 75 to 80 percent complete. Yields for both the dryland and irrigated wheat are reported from the mid 40ís to the mid 70ís. Test weights are ranging from 60 lbs. to 61 lbs. per bushel with proteins being reported from 10.6 to 11 percent.
Boise City- Harvest in this area is 80 percent complete. Yields have been ranging from the mid 40ís to mid 50ís for the most part on the dryland wheat, with some reports making in the mid 60ís. Test weights are ranging from 60 to 61 lbs. per bushel. Proteins are averaging 11 percent.
